DOUBLE ELIMINATION
GUIDE

After you have completed a minimum of 20 Single-Elimination style tournaments, the system will allow you to create Double-Elimination tournaments. Much of it is the same, but there are a few key differences that we'll outline here.

All of the initial creating steps for Double-Elimination are identical to Single-Elimination except for the actual bracket type. Once you choose Bracket Style (Double-Elim), the only limitation imposed is that the number of "teams per match" is limited to 2 Teams.

Important Information

It is always important to make the members aware of what type of tournament they are playing in. If they do not see this from the calendar, you need to make it visible on your main page and your rules page.

Main Page and Rules Page

Here is the information you will need to post on your pages with the HTML information so that all you need to do is copy and paste it. You can adjust color to accommodate the specifics of your tournament.

Types Of DE Tournaments

You can host a Double Elimination Tournament as a Singles or Doubles tournament. You can also host a Regular DE which means the games for top bracket, bottom bracket and finals are all the same game. Or you can host a Crazy DE, This means that the Top bracket is one game, Bottom Bracket is another and the Junction/Finals is another game.

*PLEASE NOTE*
If you host a Crazy DE it must be marked on the Main part of your Tournament page. Instead of using the normal blurb for a Double Elimination, use the following blurb. All you need to do is copy and paste this.

You should also have all rules for each game on your rules page!!! If you need help setting up the HTML on your rules page you can use the information above or you can ask an Admin or your trainer to assist you.

MIA'S And DQ'S

If a player DQ's or times out in the Top Bracket they get a loss then are moved to Bottom Bracket, so they get to play again. If the player is still missing in the Bottom Bracket, you set another 10 minute timer for them in Bottom Bracket.

If both players in a match in the Top Bracket time out, you advance the invitor in the Top Bracket match, then in their next Top Bracket match they automatically DQ. They are now in the Bottom Bracket. In the Bottom Bracket remember they get another 10 minute timer.

Understanding The Links

The biggest difference between Single-Elimination tournaments and Double-Elimination tournaments is in how they are reported. You will find two links in regards to matches when administering a Double-Elimination.

In addition to the links described below, instead of the standings page being on the TD Administration page as the default view, there is a link to open the Standings Page in a new window.

Report Match

When you click on this link you will see any matches that are currently in progress, and only those matches. You will see the distinction of Upper Bracket and Lower Bracket. Upper Bracket pairings are with players that have not yet lost a game. Bottom Bracket pairings are with players that have lost a game and are one loss away from elimination. When you see Junction, that is the beginning of the Finals. If the Bottom Bracket player wins the Junction game, then there will be a "Finals" game. If the Upper Bracket player wins the Junction game, the tournament is over.

As soon as the brackets show that 2 teams should currently be competing, the match will be listed here in the Report Match area until such time that it is reported. In order to report a match on behalf of the losing player, simply click the circle button next to the winner's name and click the Report Loss button. Once you have successfully reported the match, you can use the link to Return to the Administration page for your tournament. You would then click the Report Match link again to see if any new pairings are available.

Unlike a Single-Elimination tournament, you do not wait for a round of pairings to finish all games before posting the next pairings. As soon as a new pairing is available in the Report Match area, you would post it in the Lobby.

Adjust Match

If you need to fix a match that was previously reported incorrectly, you will need to use this link.

When you click on Adjust Match, you will be taken to a modified standings page. A name with a circle button in front of it indicates that currently that name is listed as the loser of the match. To change the incorrectly reported match, simply click the circle button and then scroll down and click on Adjust Match. The winner will then be switched from the original report to the corrected report.

*PLEASE NOTE*
Please be very very careful about marking the right winner as when you click the wrong winner if it is not caught in time this could back up your tournament substantially. It is always best to mark your winners down on paper OR mark your winners while you remain at the table and double check yourself before leaving the table.

The Final Match

In a Double-Elimination tournament, the final match or matches are a big more involved. The key thing to remember is that in order to be eliminated from the tournament; the player must lose 2 times!

When you get to the table, please announce before start of game about the rules of the Junction. Example: WELCOME TO THE JUNCTION! IF SUE WINS GAME IS OVER, IF BOB WINS, YOU TWO PLAY AGAIN. So if the top bracket player is playing the junction, and the player in the bottom bracket wins the game, then they have to play one more game as each will now have only 1 loss and neither is yet eliminated. The second match is declared to be the finals.
